Since 2008 however the numbers of Golden retrievers that have come up for adoption have increased. The reason cited for this sudden influx of dogs is the downturn in the economy. Many people are not able to afford having a Golden retriever and therefore surrender them. These dogs are really good and many of them are even pedigree pets. If it were not for their owners financial situation they would never have come up for adoption.

If you are looking for a Golden retriever it is best if you contact a few rescue centers to see if they have a dog for you. It is really sad that more than 7 million adoptable pets are put down every year simply because of overcrowding in rescue agencies. Golden retrievers make up a large number out of this and if you can save even one from being put to sleep you will be doing both yourself as well as your dog a favor. Just look online for rescue or adoption centers or agencies and a number will come up in your search. Some of them charge you for the adoption while others do not and the charge varies from center to center.

Call them up and talk to them and if possible pay each center a visit. Even if you pay more for these dogs is actually OK because these centers will use your money to take care of other Golden retrievers that have not found any takers as yet instead of it going to line the pocket of some breeder. Another reason for looking specifically for golden retriever rescue agencies is because most of these centers will give basic training to their dogs so that the transition to a new house will be lowered.

Try one and see, just because you are not getting a pup does not mean much, even an adult dog will love you just as much if not more because you have saved them from a worse fate. Just make sure you understand the commitment you will need to make to a rescue dog. The last thing you want to do is send it back because you can't look after it.
